To Become a Garden Volunteer

  • Fill out an online application. You will receive a confirmation email and will be contacted by a volunteer manager.
  • Become a Member. Volunteers in the Garden take part in every aspect of the institution's growth, which is why we require that volunteers join and maintain their membership.
  • Attend training courses that are offered multiple times throughout the year and can be taken on weekdays or weekends.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:


Special Events Volunteers

Special event volunteers direct visitors to event activities, answer questions about the event and assist visitors at special activity areas. Other duties may include ushering, ticket taking, distributing programs and other activities to help ensure that participants have a positive experience and enjoy each special event in the Garden.

Requirements:

  • September – May
  • 6 or more shifts a season
  • Attend orientation or other specialized training prior to event (if scheduled)
  • Arrive early to become familiar with the event

Additional training is required.

Membership Envoys

The Desert Botanical Garden needs energetic and proactive volunteers to sell memberships and promote the Garden and its' programs. No previous experience needed, the Garden provides all training that is required for the job. If you love the Garden and love to talk to people then this is the job for you!

Requirements:

  • Envoys work 3 to 4-hour shifts – Sell memberships and promote the Garden at the membership kiosk (at admissions) or at one of our many events.

Garden Docents

The Desert Botanical Garden needs energetic volunteers to share desert knowledge and transform the visitor experience into one of discovery and meaning. No previous experience needed, the Garden provides all training that is required for the job. All that is necessary is your enthusiasm and love of the desert. 

Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors 
  • Docents work one 4-hour shift per week (October – May) - Leading tours, staffing Discovery Stations and interacting with Garden visitors. 

Docents needed for these times:

  • Afternoons | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday - Friday
  • Mornings | 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday
  • Afternoons | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Additional training is required.


Garden Educators

Volunteers serve as interpreters for school children, adult chaperones, and teachers relating essential concepts about how desert plants, animals and people adapt to the desert environment. 

Requirements:

  • Able to work outdoors in hot and cold weather
  • Able to bend and lift up to 10 pounds
  • Able to stand/walk up to 2 hours
  • Must be available to work one weekday morning per week for 3 hours between 8:30 a.m - 1 p.m.
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages and adults is a must!
  • Flexibility to work in a fast paced team environment
  • Experience with formal or informal teaching is a plus, but not required

Guest Guide Volunteers

Guest Guide Volunteers provide visitors with a friendly face and enhance their experience by providing trail guidance, map orientation and daily schedule information.

Requirements:

  • Two 3-hour shift monthly
  • Excellent Guest Service skills
  • Ability to stand/walk outdoors in all seasons

Horticulture Aide Volunteers

Horticulture Aide Volunteers assist the horticulture staff in caring for the Garden's living collection of desert plants. Volunteers prune, plant, irrigate, weed and work outdoors among the plants.

Requirements:

  • Horticulture Aide volunteers work one 4-hour shift per week (mornings, Tuesday – Saturday)
  • Passion for the care and support of desert plants (i.e. pruning, irrigation, digging and planting)
  • Enjoys interaction with and in support of staff
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather

Additional training is required.
