The Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) is a national consortium of 28 botanical gardens and arboreta dedicated to saving America's endangered plants. The primary focus of the CPC's conservation effort is ex situ conservation, beginning with seed-banking. In 1987 the Desert Botanical Garden was selected to serve as the Southwest regional garden. The southwestern region of the CPC consists primarily of Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Mojavean deserts, extending from southeastern California, across southern Arizona to southwestern New Mexico and western Texas. Desert Botanical Garden is responsible for 36 species of rare southwestern plants that are part of the CPC National Collection of rare U.S. plant taxa.
For every species in the National Collection, the Center for Plant Conservation has asked that a $10,000 endowment be established to maintain the ex situ collection as an insurance policy against extinction. Of the 36 species in the National Collection at the Desert Botanical Garden, only 7 are fully endowed. You can contribute any amount to the endowment for any of the listed species that are not yet fully endowed, by contacting the Garden at 480-481-8111. Your contribution will go directly to our efforts to ensure the survival of your selected species.
