Luminaria Bag Activity for Children | Desert Botanical Garden

OPEN DAILY 8 A.M.|7 A.M. FOR MEMBERS WED. & SUN.

‘Tis the season to start celebrating the holidays. What better way than to create your own Luminaria bag! Luminarias have a long history of communication, light, and celebration at the Garden. The tradition comes from Mexico where it has been celebrated for many years and has spread to communities throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.  Luminaria comes from the Spanish word luminar which means to light. Typically, modern luminaria contains a light source, usually a candle, inside a plain or decorated paper bag.

This activity is great for the whole family. You can start with a plain paper bag or one that has a design on it. Grab a paper bag and cut some designs into it with scissors or a hole punch.

To decorate a plain bag with scissors or hole punch. Plan out your design or make a practice bag first. Using a pencil lightly sketch on the bag where you will punch a hole or cut the bag. After that add some sand or dirt to the bottom of it to weigh it down. Now add in a small candle. You can find battery power candles or you can use a traditional one. With any open flame, be cautious of the bag catching on fire.

Don’t forget to tag the Garden’s social media page to share your luminaria bags and other ways you celebrate the holidays!
