The Magic of Desert Plants

Overview:
What makes plants so special?  Would you believe that plants are alive and dynamic!  They grow and change over time.  Plants come in all kinds of colors, shapes, textures and sizes. Students enjoy discovering the magical world of desert plants through a variety of activities designed to captivate young minds. Students learn about the role of roots, what is hidden in leaves, a secret about stems, and more.

Skills Used During this Tour:
  • Act out the functions of roots
  • Participate in an activity to demonstrate the function of cactus stems
  • Scrape an agave leaf revealing its fiber
Knowledge Outcomes:
  • Identify the different parts of a plant when prompted by a guide
  • Distinguish between different types of plants based on shape, color, texture and size when shown examples by a guide 
  • Summarize the “magic” properties of desert plant parts through the singing and repetition of a song they will learn on trail
