Building on skills and concepts introduced in Botanical Watercolor I, this class will focus on realistic expression of form, structure, texture and color using dry brush watercolor techniques. Students will work from simple plant forms including cacti and other succulents. Instructor Lynn Reves.

Take your botanical drawing skills to the next level with this new advanced drawing offering. Now is the time to incorporate the process of conceptualization to add more depth to what you are trying to convey with your drawings. Students will examine a variety of physiological botanical processes such as plant respiration, pollination, or reproduction and learn to communicate complicated subject matter in a simplified visual form. Students will refine their painting skills and techniques by creating a sense of dimension through light and shadow. Colored pencils are an excellent material for botanical art as they neat, easy to control, and useful for fine detail. Calfskin vellum is a painting surface used in botanical art for more than 3,000 years. The translucent property of vellum creates luminosity in watercolor paintings unrivaled by other surfaces. Painting on vellum using watercolors and shell gold, you will select and create a capital letter illustrating a desert plant. Vellum will be available for purchase in class. You have probably only thought of herbs in a culinary or medicinal sense. Now become knowledgeable about herbs of the Sonoran Desert by drawing live specimens. This will include Sonoran trees, shrubs, cactus and ground cover. Classroom studies will be done in graphite with the potential for following up with an appropriate, classical technique of your choice.
