Conservation Collections Manager

One of the world’s major botanical gardens specializing in desert plants seeks an individual to manage and curate its conservation collections. The Conservation Collections Manager will oversee both conservation germplasm (seeds, live plants, etc.), and the data (accession information, % seed viability, longevity in storage, live plants in cultivation etc.) associated with the germplasm. 

The Collections Manager will be a member of the Research Department and work closely with and report to the Program Director, Conservation of Threatened Species and Habitats. Responsibilities will include: inventory of all conservation seed collections and of conservation plants in cultivation, accessioning/de-accessioning of material, systematic testing of seed collections for viability and development of appropriate strategies for maintaining the integrity of the seed collections, environmental monitoring and control, storage maintenance and security, and ensuring that collection data/information is easily accessible (to appropriate persons) and searchable. The Conservation Collections Manager will also maintain copies (if not the originals) of all permits related to the collection and possession of conservation material covered by state, federal or international laws and treaties. 

The successful applicant will have 1) training in botany, ecology, horticulture and/or plant conservation, 2) experience/expertise in database management and development 3) Masters degree (preferred). The successful applicant will also demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills and work well as a team member in a collaborative environment.
